About Our Research

Our research focuses on the educational experiences and the aspirations of undocumented high school students in Utah to reach a higher education.

Our focus question is: "What is keeping students of color, specifically undocumented students, from continuing their education after high school?"

To conduct our research we uses surveys. We have surveyed over 160 students of different ethnic backgrounds, documented and undocumented, to find out what they knew about the process of applying to college and their educational goals.

While we conducted the surveys we also documented the different reactions people had to our research questions. For example, when we went to the Boys and Girls Club one of the teens asked us what the word "undocumented" meant, another boy responded “It means you are illegal.”

We also documented our own experiences as part of our research. One shocking example was when one of our team mates was faced with a teacher that not only took the surveys away, but tore them up in front of the class saying “This is NOT acceptable in class!”

Our research groups found that many undocumented students are unaware of their rights and the legislation which can allow them access post-secondary schools paying instate tuition.

We believe this research is important because students of color and undocumented students are underrepresented in colleges and universities in Utah. We have found that they are not well informed about all of their legal educational rights, such as HB 144, and are unaware of private scholarships that are available to them.

We've also found that undocumented students are afraid to ask for information, regarding education, or getting help from their school counselors because they are afraid of revealing their legal status. They fear the possibility of getting deported.

We want this research to provide a safe way for undocumented students to find out information about their rights, and most importantly for them to have safe access to information about college.
